Unclaimed Pension Credit could benefit Wrexham residents

Thousands of older people in Wales are missing out on millions of pounds of unclaimed financial entitlements.

Latest figures suggest £180 million of Pension Credit was unclaimed in Wales last year and Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths wants local residents to make sure they claim what they are entitled to.

If a pensioner’s weekly state pension is less than £167.25 (£255.25 for couples), they may be eligible for Pension Credit.  Pension Credit tops up their income and unlocks a range of other entitlements, such as council tax discounts, free dental treatment and help with housing costs.

Individuals may still be entitled to Pension Credit even if they own their own home or have savings and other income.

Lesley Griffiths AM said:  “This extra financial support would make a big difference to the lives of pensioners in Wrexham and across Wales.  The latest statistics suggest the average amount of Pension Credit received by those claiming is £58 a week, which works out as an extra £3,000 a year.”

“I do not want Wrexham residents missing out on something they are perfectly entitled to and would encourage them to contact the Pension Credit claim line for support.”

Making a claim for Pension Credit is straightforward – simply call the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234.  All people need is their national insurance number, bank details and information about their income and savings.
