Social Enterprise from Wrexham Nominated for National Award

A Wrexham-based social enterprise is in the running for a national award, just over two years after its inception.

Empower – Be The Change, which was founded by Wrexham resident Jo Clay, has been shortlisted for the Social Enterprise of the Year in the ‘Employment, Education, Training’ category.

A special awards night, recognising excellence within the social business sector in Wales, is being held on Wednesday 26 September at the City Hall in Cardiff.

There are seven categories in total and the individual winners will be automatically entered into the main Social Enterprise of the Year award.

In partnership with a range of local and national organisations, Empower – Be The Change delivers bespoke programmes which increase people’s confidence, motivation, independence and self-management.

In a relatively short space of time, the enterprise has moved from strength to strength.

Empower has worked in partnership with local organisations such as Glyndwr University and St Christopher’s School, and more recently has developed a closer working relationship with Remploy, delivering programmes through their work health scheme.

Securing almost £250,000 from Big Lottery enabled Empower to employ two new members of staff and will result in more course being available in the not too distant future.  With over 200 people participating in the programmes so far, ambitious plans are in the pipeline to target 1,000 people by 2023.

Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths has supported Jo since the beginning of her venture and said: “Over the past couple of years, I have witnessed the opportunities created by Empower – Be The Change, helping local residents gain confidence, develop new skills and benefit from new experiences.”
