Student nurses, midwives and associated health professionals starting their studies in Wales from September 2020 will still be able to apply for bursaries.
The decision to extend the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme until 2021 has been welcomed by Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths.
While a similar scheme was scrapped in England by the Tory UK Government in 2017, extending the scheme in Wales will help provide certainty and support individuals who chose to study particular healthcare-related programmes in Wales.
Students will only be eligible for the full package of support if they commit to working in Wales for up to two years after qualifying.
Lesley Griffiths AM said “This investment highlights a clear difference in approach between England and Wales.”
“By continuing to fund the bursary scheme, the Welsh Labour Government is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to training the next generation of nurses and midwives, helping safeguard the future of the NHS.”
