Wrexham Council’s proposal to introduce charges for Blue Badge holders completely lacks compassion for disabled residents.
That is the view of Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, who has written to Wrexham Council’s Leader outlining her opposition.
The Local Authority is pressing ahead with the proposal in spite of hundreds of people signing a petition against the plans, which was initiated by local campaigner, Nathan Lee Davies.
Ms Griffiths said: “Whilst I appreciate difficult decisions must be made as the UK Government continues to impose its austerity agenda, this proposal is ill-advised and unfairly targets the most vulnerable residents. It will generate a relatively small amount financially for the amount of distress and anguish it will cause.”
“I have previously highlighted Wrexham Council’s budget for the upcoming financial year will be increasing after the Welsh Government confirmed local government settlements. As a result, I hope several controversial proposals will be revisited and reconsidered by the Tory/Independent Wrexham Council.”
“I am disappointed with the Council Leader’s response which doesn’t address my concerns and I will continue to make representations on behalf of the constituents who have contacted me.”
