Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, is supporting Mental Health Awareness week, this week (14th – 20th May).
This year’s campaign is focusing on stress. Research has shown that 16 million people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year, and stress often plays a significant role.
Tackling stress can help address mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and, in some instances, self-harm and suicide.
Lesley Griffiths AM said: “Two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetime, with stress often being a key factor.”
“Our mental health is just as important as our physical health and Mental Health Awareness Week offers an important opportunity to focus everyone’s attention on the issues, reminding people they are not alone and helping end the stigma.”
“Support is available and people should never suffer in silence.”
The Mental Health Foundation, who initiated the campaign, have put together a guide, with an introduction to what stress is, what the signs of stress are, what simple steps you can take when feeling stressed and provide practical advice for preventing it.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, the Foundation will be calling for change – for a less stressed nation – and plan to produce blogs, films and resources, as well as a ground-breaking report on stress.
