Two new theatres and two temporary units are being opened at Wrexham Maelor Hospital to restore endoscopy and day surgery services.
The Welsh Government will provide Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board with over £3m to install the permanent theatres, which are scheduled to open in March 2018.
Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, who had raised issues with the Welsh Government’s Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething AM, has welcomed the announcement.
To ensure disruption is kept to a minimum, two mobile theatres will operate for a six month period from January 2018.
The capital funding will enable the health board to address infrastructure issues which have led to the closure of two theatres in 2016, and an endoscopy suite earlier this year.
It is expected the funding for the two ‘modular’ theatres will provide new, more robust facilities for at least the next 10 years.
Lesley Griffiths AM said: “Securing over £3m from the Welsh Labour Government to install new theatre suits at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital will make a positive difference.”
“The new, modern facilities will allow health professionals to work more efficiently, ultimately ensuring people from Wrexham and the surrounding areas receive the best possible services and care.”
